According to his chief of staff, Jacob Hochberg, U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar of Texas was carjacked at gunpoint on Monday night near his Washington, D.C. house.
Cuellar’s white Toyota SUV was stolen as he was parked by three knife-wielding thieves wearing knit hats and ski masks. Cuellar was unhurt in the incident, but his automobile was stolen before being recovered by the officials.
Capitol Police are working with the Metropolitan Police Department to locate and capture the individuals who are still at large.
Investigators also found the congressman’s devices and other belongings, including his mobile phone, which had been left behind.
The carjacking occurred in the Navy Yard neighborhood of Washington, D.C., a frequent hangout for congressional members only blocks south of the Capitol.
Fortunately, Cuellar was not physically harmed as a result of the heinous act. However, the ongoing search for his armed assailants highlights persistent safety worries even in regions thought to be secure.
