Lord Buddha explained three important characteristics of life, known as Tilakkhana (Three Marks of Existence). These three truths help us understand the real nature of the world and show us the path to freedom from suffering. Let’s understand them in simple words.
1. Anicca (Impermanence) – Everything Changes
Anicca means nothing is permanent. Everything in this world is constantly changing—our body, emotions, relationships, seasons, and time.
For example, a beautiful flower blooms but withers after a few days. Similarly, happiness and sorrow come and go. If we accept that everything is temporary, we will not suffer too much when something is lost.
2. Dukkha (Suffering) – Life is Full of Struggles
Dukkha means suffering or dissatisfaction. We feel unhappy when our desires are not fulfilled. But even when we get what we want, the happiness does not last forever, because everything is temporary.
For example, illness, old age, and death are natural parts of life. Understanding that suffering is inevitable can help us find inner peace.
3. Anattā (No Self) – There is No Permanent “I”
Anattā means the illusion of “I”. We believe that our body, mind, thoughts, and feelings define who we are, but they are always changing. If they keep changing, then the idea of a permanent “self” is just an illusion.
When we realize that there is no fixed “self” or soul, we become free from desires, anger, and ego. This is the first step toward true freedom.
Conclusion: Why Understanding These Three Truths is Important
By deeply understanding Anicca, Dukkha, and Anattā, we realize that nothing in this world is worth clinging to. When we start seeing life as it truly is, our mind becomes peaceful, and we move toward real happiness.
Lord Buddha said:
“One who sees these three truths clearly can be free from the cycle of birth and death.”
If we accept these truths in our lives, we can gradually free ourselves from suffering and find real peace and joy.
