Khatu Shyam Mandir History
The Khatu Shyam Mandir history can be traced back to the Mahabharata period. The great-grandson of Bhima, Veer Barbarik was a great devotee of Lord Krishna.
As a symbol of his love for Lord Krishna, he sacrifices his head. Impressed by Barbarik’s devotion, Lord Krishna blesses him and grants him a boon that he be worshipped in Kali Yuga in the form of Shyam.
Veer Barbarik is also worshipped as “Shree Khatu Shyam” in the village of Khatu. He is popularly known as “Sahara of the Hare” among his devotees.

It is believed that the temple was constructed by the ruler of the Khatu region, Raja Roop Singh Chauhan, and his wife Narmada Kanwar.

According to another popular belief, about 1000 years ago, Baba’s head was found in Shyam Kund on Ekadashi day. Near the kund, there was a big peepal tree.
Whenever cows grazed in the vicinity of the tree, the milk of the cows flowed automatically. This surprised the villagers and when they excavated the region, they discovered Baba Shyam’s head.
The head was handed over to Queen Narmada Kanwar. The sheesh was established in the temple in Vikram Samvat in 1084.
