Mindfulness meaning

Mindfulness is the state of being conscious or aware of something as per its literal meaning. The dictionary also defines Mindfulness as a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on this very present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.

This involves simply observing thoughts, feelings, and other sensations. It is believed that Anapanasati and Vipassana are the meditation practices that paved the way for enlightenment to Lord Buddha. Anapanasati is the sati ( mindfulness ) of anapana (inhalation and exhalation) of breathing. Vipassana is the ‘special seeing’ of the things in its present forms as it is.

It is very easy to start mindfulness meditation. One can learn on its own, but you can hire a programmer if you do meditation for some health reasons. Here are some steps to start this supreme meditation.

1- Manage your meditation time 

If you want to do mindfulness meditation, you should manage your time. Just try this practice and you will love to do it. Do it in the morning or the evening, a time of your choice but make sure to practice it daily.

2- Be comfortable

A quiet and relaxed place is mandatory for this practice. Sit in a comfortable chair or on the floor with your neck and head straight. You should not wear comfortable and loose clothing to avoid distractions.

3- Consider a timer

To avoid any kind of distraction, a soft gentle alarm is needed. This eliminates any kind of excuses you have for stopping and doing something else.

4- Focus on breathing

This is the major step of mindfulness meditation. You should focus on your breathing. Feel the process of inhalation and exhalation and let the air enters your nostrils and leave through the mouth.

5- Relax yourself

Give yourself a break. If you feel heavy heart or you are in depression, follow this technique and try to focus on your breath.

If you are facing any difficulty in practicing this on your own, consider downloading a mindfulness app as a helping material that provides you free meditations and teaches you a variety of tools to help you get focused throughout the day.

There are many benefits if you practice mindfulness in your daily life. It helps to find a new way to bring calm in your life especially on those days when you are depressed. All the other activities and tasks that provide you plenty of opportunities are also helpful in practicing this meditation. For example, if you are brushing your teeth, feel your feet on the floor and brush in your hand.
Similarly, while doing dishes, feel the warm water on your hand, and focus on the bubbles.
While exercising, instead of watching a program on tv, try to focus on your breathing and where your feet are in space.
